Teaching your child calming techniques helps them develop the skills they need to recover from their most challenging emotions.
Regularly practicing calming techniques supports your child’s emotional development, develops their self regulation skills and builds their resilience.
When your children practice these skills, they become equipped to better process and regulate challenging emotions such as angry, frustrated, sad, embarrassed, overwhelmed and anxious.
Calming techniques are particularly useful for helping your child:
- Start the day calm
- Reduce separation anxiety (e.g. at drop-off)
- Transition off screens
- Calm down before bed
Calming Cards are designed to introduce you (and your little ones!) to calming techniques.
Calming strategies include Deep Breathing, Muscle Relaxation, Grounding, Visualisation, Yoga and Mindfulness.
Calming Cards can be used in a variety of contexts, including:
- A calming corner (or calming space) in your home
- Out and about
- Calming activities before bed
- Classrooms
- Day Care Centres
Research has also found that when our kids learn self regulation skills in early childhood they are more likely to have improved behaviour, better social skills, a higher level of engagement in school, better academic outcomes and improved mental health and wellness throughout their life.
