How to Help Your Child Calm Down Before Bed
Are you looking for a technique to help your child calm down just before bed?
A really easy technique to use (that’s also really lovely and enjoyable) is simply laying down together and asking each other to close your eyes and think about your favourite part of the day.
It can take a little bit of practice, but is a really worth-while exercise when used over time. It not only helps your child reflect on their day, it also helps both of you feel a sense of connection with each other before the day ends (super important if you haven’t had many opportunities to connect during the day!)
Asking each other about your favourite part of the day is also a great way to find out about what’s been happening in your child’s day and the things they’re really enjoying about day care, school or other activities.
If your child is hesitate to share or isn’t really sure what to say, start by asking if you can go first, and share a “favourite part” of your day that involved your child.
Try this a few nights in a row until you and your child start to get the hang of it.
My Mr 5 and I have been using this technique for a few years now and its become part of our nightly ritual that we both really look forward to.
If you have a chance to try this technique out during the week, I’d love to hear how you go (comment at the bottom of this page or pop an email through to me dominique@ohbeehave.com.au)!
