How to Reduce Meltdowns at Separation Time
I’ve heard from a few parents that the start of the year can be a particularly stressful time for both their kids (and themselves), particularly when they get back into school or day care, so I thought it would be a good time to re-share a favourite strategy that my audience loved from last year – “Pocket Hugs & Kisses”.
This is a really handy strategy for little ones who have a hard time saying goodbye to their parents or caregivers when they are entering the classroom or daycare for the day.
To help your kids feel comforted by you personally during the day, try putting some “hugs” or “kisses” in their pockets when you say goodbye to them.
Explain to your child that they can use the hugs or kisses when they need them from you during the day.
For a quick demo on how this works, check out this reel on my instagram (I started recording the explanation and then my son jumped to demonstrate – totally not what I planned, but it worked out in the end!)
Take Your Calm With You All Day
Do your kids needs some calming techniques to help them work through their big emotions during the day?
Make sure you stock up on Calm Stickers to help your kids take their calm with them all day. The Calm Sticker acts as a prompt to help your child remember to use their emotional regulation techniques when they need it during the day.
Simply choose a sticker, practice the calming technique with your child and help them pop it on their shirt as a handy reminder to use their calming technique when they’re feeling overwhelmed during the day.
If you have a chance to try out the “pocket hugs and kisses” or the Calm Stickers this week I would love to hear how you go! Comment at the bottom of this page or pop an email through to me dominique@ohbeehave.com.au
