"Mum, I don't wanna go to school. I HATE it there!!".
Screams Oscar as he throws his bag down next to the front door and stamps his foot.
Oscar’s Mum picks up his bag and sternly replies through gritted teeth
"Oscar, get in the car RIGHT. THIS. SECOND. I don’t have time for this. You are going to school today whether you like it or not!!!!".
Oscar bursts into tears and shuffles slowly towards the car sniffling and whimpering
"buuuuttt I dooonnn’t".
*sniffle sniffle*
“liiiike it”.
*sniffle*
“thereeee”.
Oscar’s Mum hurries out to the car, straps the baby into her car seat, dumps Oscar’s school bag at his feet, jumps in the driver’s seat, and slowly turns around to hand a tissue to Oscar.
“I’m sorry I yelled. I know you’re having a hard time at school, but right now we are running late and if I don’t get you to school on time, I will be late for work. We can talk about this after school”.
Oscar sucks in a big breath, blows his nose loudly and quietly whispers
“Ok Mum”.
Mum suggests to Oscar that he pull faces at the baby while they drive along. Pulling faces is one of Oscar’s favourite things to do!
In no time, he has the baby giggling away as he pulls the silliest faces he can think of.
They reach the school with 5 minutes to spare. Mum spots one of Oscar friends, Bevis, in the playground and encourages Oscar to go play until the siren sounds. Oscar agrees and races over the swings.
Mum can see Oscar and Bevis engaged in a competition over who can swing the highest.
Satisfied that he is distracted, Mum seeks out Oscar’s teacher, Mrs Honeypot to ask how Oscar has been handling school lately.
Mrs Honeypot says Oscar is pretty quiet in class and completes most of his work without too much trouble. She has noticed he has some trouble with subtraction, but that he helps some of the other kids in the class with their spelling.
Mum tells Mrs Honeypot that Oscar has been saying he doesn’t want to go to school lately.
Mrs Honeypot reports to Mum that Oscar seems fine in the classroom, but sometimes does look a little down after recess and lunch. Mrs Honeypot promises to keep an eye on him when she is on lunch time duty that day.
Mum thanks Mrs Honeypot and hurries off to work.

After lunch, Mum gets a phone call from Mrs Honeypot.
Mum listens intently as Mrs Honeypot tells her she overheard two boys telling Oscar that if he didn’t give them his lunch that they would not let him play on the swings.
To Mum’s surprise, Mrs Honeypot reports that Oscar told the boys they couldn’t have his lunch and that they would need to take turns on the swings with him and Bevis.
Mrs Honeypot said that she did not intervene, but did quietly pull the boys aside later to speak to them about bullying and had contacted their parents, as the school would not tolerate such behaviour.

After school, Mum picks up Oscar and asks if he would like to go out for an icecream.
Oscar is really excited and in the car, starts to tell Mum about how he swung the highest at school today on the swings, so that means he gets to go first tomorrow.
Mum asks Oscar about what usually happens at lunch time at school.
Oscar says that sometimes a couple of boys are mean to him and Bevis, but they stood up to them today and he doesn’t think they will be a problem anymore.
Mum points out to Oscar that it is OK to ask a teacher for help, or to tell her if there are problems at school.
Oscar responds with
“Yeah Mum, you know dobbers wear nappies”.
Mum sighs
“Oscar, your little sister wears nappies and she couldn’t dob if she tried. I don’t want to hear that again, and I’m glad you sorted things out on your own, but I want you to promise me you will talk to me or Mrs Honeypot if you have trouble in the future”.
Oscar sighs back
“Yyyeesssssss Muuuummmm”.
Oscar grins up at his Mum and asks
“Now can I please have a triple choc with marshmellows?”.
Mum grins back and orders Oscar his ice cream.
