How do I get my Kids to SHUT UP

Do you have trouble getting your kids to lower their voices inside? I know this is a challenge for a lot of parents so I wanted to share a really simple technique with you today.

This may sound counter-intuitive but this strategy actually helps give your kids permission to be loud (and sets a boundary round it).

Next time you find your kids are becoming noisy in the house, try this simple thing:

Challenge them to go outside and be as noisy as they can!

Encourage your kids to go outdoor and use their voices as loudly as they can (if you have more than one child, turn it into a competition).

Explain to your kids that once they have “gotten all their noises out” they can come back inside (ready to practice inside voices).

This approach helps meet the need that your child has (to release excess energy or stress) and gives them the opportunity to set their own boundary around it (“I’ve had enough of being noisy now and I’m ready go inside and use an appropriate inside voice).

If you have a chance to try this technique out during the week pop a comment below to let let me know how you went or email me dominique@ohbeehave.com.au

I’d love to hear from you!

  1. This.
    This.
    This.
    So much truth to this.
” Maybe some parents do want their little cherubs to talk a little less (but remember, you do spend pretty much the first year of their life encouraging them to talk, and when they make the tiniest sound that even resembles a word you jump up and down like it’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever heard, so it does make sense that they would want to continue on the “talking as much as possible” path…”
